Spend time in true Canadian wilderness with endless terrain and endless powder. The remote heli-accessed Boulder Hut will be your base for an unforgettable week of touring in BC’s Purcell mountains. With coaching in Fernie to get you acclimatised, technically ready and mentally prepared, you’ll be set to earn your turns on the hunt for the most pristine powder of your life!
An entire mountain range to yourself and your friends, no lifts in sight, miles away from civilization. 15,000 acres of terrain. You could hear a pin drop. It really puts things into perspective and brings you closer than ever to the mountains, nature and the pure sensations of skiing.
You’ll arrive in Fernie where you’ll spend a few days before you head deep into BC’s wilderness. This is the time to acclimatise and get ready for the big adventure to come. You’ll be briefed by our instructors and hosts on what to expect at the Boulder Hut – everything from what a typical day will involve to what to pack in your rucksack.
Importantly, you’ll also get a couple of days on Fernie’s powder-laden slopes with a Nonstop coach to get your ski legs back and fine tune your technique ahead of your ski expedition.
Our instructors will be on hand with advice and tips, but otherwise you’ll be ripping around Fernie’s five alpine bowls and seeking out the powder.
The Boulder Hut is nestled deep in the Canadian Rockies in the Purcell Mountains. Only accessible by helicopter, you are most definitely in the wilderness. It is run by Mark and Sarah Yancey who have an infectious passion for adventure. They have been operating the lodge for 10 years and have a great deal of experience in the backcountry.
You’ll be well taken care of during your stay at the Boulder Hut, with delicious home-cooked meals prepared for you every day. The wood-fired hot tub is the perfect place to relax and chat about your touring exploits from the day. The lodge is mobile and internet free which means it’s a great location to disconnect from the outside world.
We’ll equip you with the touring skis and safety equipment you need to explore the backcountry. Each day you’ll venture out into your spectacular surroundings with two guides who have expert knowledge of the terrain, conditions and snowpack.
They’ll tell you the plan of attack for the day and you’ll be on your way. Earning your turns as you wind your way up the mountain seeking fresh, untouched powder. After touring up you’ll transition back into ski mode to enjoy the best turns of your life.
To take part is this course, you will need to be an advanced skier with some basic ski touring experience.
A good night's sleep to match a great day on the hill, this is an ideal base for your time in Fernie. Back in 2007 we purchased our very own hotel and set about making it the best ski accommodation possible by focusing on comfort and excellent facilities.
All rooms have queen sized beds and facilities include a sauna and hot tub, ski storage and tuning room, movie room, full kitchen facilities and our on-site restaurant and bar, where all of your course meals are served.
You'll receive 2 days of guided coaching in the best terrain & snow conditions Fernie has to offer ... this is to get you back in the swing of things prior to arriving at the Boulder Hut.
You'll be treated to a continental breakfast at the Red Tree Lodge every mornng you wake up there and hearty breakfasts are served at the Boulder Hut each morning.
You will be provided with everything you need to make a packed lunch whilst you are staying at the Boulder Hut.
A welcome and farewell dinner will be served at the Red Tree Lodge at the beginning and end of your trip. You have access to a kitchen so can prepare your own meals or eat out on other evenings. A hearty dinner is served every night at the Boulder Hut.
You'll be provided with a 5 day lift pass for Fernie Alpine Resort. So you can ski every day that you are there.
We provide airport transfers from and to Calgary airport at set departure times. Ask us for details so you can co-ordinate your flights. All your transport within the resort is taken care of, just don't forget your gear.
Your host will ensure your course runs smoothly. They'll be on hand 24/7 in Fernie for a chat, laugh, or to solve any problems. You'll also be in safe hands whilst at the Boulder Hut
You'll head to the Boulder Hut on Wednesday for a week of backcountry touring. You'll be with two professional guides at all times. Previous touring experience is essential.
We will provide you with skis with specialist touring bindings, skins, an avalanche transceiver, probe, shovel and back pack. We will also provide you with a winter sleeping bag for your time at the Boulder Hut.
You'll be dropped off at the Boulder Hut and return via helicopter. It's weather dependent so we allow a window to fly.
You'll be able to go CAT Skiing on your final day in Fernie - if you back your legs to still feel up to it after a week of touring!
