Treble Cone, in Lake Wanaka is the premier ski destination in New Zealand. New Zealand's relatively small population in relation to its size means that you can enjoy long peaceful uncrowded slopes as the location to hone your skills. Treble Cone also offers exceptional views and awesome off-piste terrain.
The far reaching boundaries spread over two large basins - Saddle and Home, and the mountain offers up the longest vertical in the Southern Lakes. The terrain offers an off piste paradise with some of the Southern Hemisphere's best free skiing through steep untracked powder.
The basins provide a unique experience with panoramic views free from development allowing you to enjoy steep chutes, wide faces, drop offs, thrilling gullies, powder bowls and no grooming. Added to this, the slopes are practically empty resulting in fresh lines all day long on a powder day. One thing that never changes between any of the resorts is the warm, local hospitality, and great skiing.
You will be staying in the town of Wanaka which is a beautiful small Alpine resort surrounded by the breathtaking beauty of the World Heritage listed National Park of the Southern Alps. There is a relaxed and welcoming feel to the town, along with a wealth of activities off the hill including restaurants, cafes and bars.
With over 40 bars and pubs to choose from, the town comes to life during the winter season. If you fancy sampling the local off-snow entertainment you can choose from mountain biking, skydiving and other activities fit for any outdoor enthusiast.
Your home for the course will be in one of the Wanaka Selection properties in the heart of Wanaka. They have a mixture of stylish modern houses, beautiful apartments and cottages, all finished to a high standard with modern facilities, so it will feel like home in no time.
You will share a room with one or your coursemates, so you'll be able to chill out after a hard day on the slopes. The apartments you will be staying in have great kitchens so it is super easy to prepare meals during your season. The local supermaket is just a short walk from the apartments and typically house mates will chip in together to share the cooking duties... there's also plenty of eating out throughout the season!
New Zealand is an awesome country to train as a ski or snowboard instructor and their qualifications, along with those from Canada, are widely regarded as the best in the world. For most popular instructor systems, Level 1 is the first of four qualifications. With New Zealand Level 1 you will be eligible to instruct beginners and novices on the mountain, whereas with BASI Level 1 you are only able to teach on artificial slopes.
We expect the vast majority of our trainees to gain their Level 1 qualification. There is a fair amount of work available for Level 1 instructors in New Zealand. It is also possible to find work outside of New Zealand, but having Level 2 will open far more doors.
For those that gaining their Level 2 in New Zealand, you will be able to go straight on to work in the Northern Hemisphere, assuming you have your relevant visas sorted. Like the Canadian qualifications, New Zealand's accreditation is very well respected and will allow you to teach intermediates and advanced students.
