6 Week 'MTM' Off-Piste Course
Course Structure
Six weeks may sound like a long time but the reality is it wizzes by - especially when you're having fun! We have a lot of material to squeeze in so expect a busy agenda but with lots of skiing or snowboarding, lots of learning and lots of fun. Of course there's still plenty of time to freeride and enjoy the laid-back life of living in Fernie.
Course Overview
| Pre-Course | Although most people stick to the course dates some people choose to come to Fernie before the course starts to make the most of their season pass. |
| Week 1 | Arrival in Fernie! We arrange a boot-fitting and equipment advice session to ensure everyone is on the correct gear. Ski and snowboard groups are arranged and the goals for the programme are explained. Week 6 is the focus - we want you to make the most of the backcountry experience. |
| Week 2 | Early in the course we run the 2 day Avalanche Safety Training course, ensuring you have the knowledge to explore off-piste in safety. The coaches will develop your technique both on the pistes and in off-piste terrain. |
| Week 3 | The coaches will be taking you to more advanced terrain and encouraging you to achieve some personal milestones. Fernie has lots of fantastic and super fun tree runs so we'll be developing tactics for skiing or riding in the trees and building confidence. |
| Week 4 | Weekly video analysis will have helped you assess your (and your friends') skiing or snowboarding and make improvements as suggested by your coach. The first ski touring or split boarding lessons will introduce you to the magic (and initially the fatigue!) of touring. |
| Week 5 | Coaching continues to build your skills - especially in off-piste conditions. Ski touring and split boarding sessions continue, ensuring you feel familiar with the equipment you'll be using in Week 6. |
| Week 6 | THE HIGHLIGHT! The backcountry experience involves a helicopter ride to a remote log cabin - your home for 4 days. Enjoy ski touring and split boarding in this backcountry paradise, riding fresh powder and sharing perfect days with great friends. |
| Post-Course | It's pretty likely that you'll want to stay in Fernie after the course and if you have the time then we encourage you to do so. |
This overview provides a snap shot of what's on offer. We schedule a Level 1 instructor course in Week 5 for those that are keen to gain a qualification while in Canada. This is not the focus of the course but is usually achievable. Please ask us for details.
