Red Mountain 11-week instructor course diary – week 4

Here’s this weeks blog entry from Red Mountain. This week Stacey Cleaveley picked up the quill:

An unexpected pleasure here at Red has been the friendliness of the locals and extent of our inclusion in the community. ‘The Shovel’ and ‘The Prestige’ have become our extended living room and in each we have been warmly welcomed by both the staff and the regulars. Chatting to locals on chairlifts often results in great advice about the mountain, local events (… and invitations to some wicked house-parties). Consequently, when we were given the opportunity to volunteer and help out at the 113th Rossland Winter Carnival, we leapt at it.

The town was rocking with events including live bands, a beer garden with amazing ice statues, a rail jam set-up on one of the main roads, learn to luge sessions, pond hockey, snow volleyball and the annual 4-man bobsled race. A bobsled track was built on another of the main roads and home-made bobsleds carrying 4 (very brave) individuals were sent careening down a steep hill… some even made it to the end in one piece!!

A bunch of us helped to set up the beer garden and worked bar shifts over the two days of the carnival – we worked hard and had a brilliant time. It was great both to be included and to feel that we were giving something, however small, back to the community.

Here are some more pics taken in Red Mountain this week:
