Nonstop courses often lead to new adventures, even for those who don’t plan to go on and instruct. Here’s an update we’ve just got through from Annette Dahl, who has been putting her instructor qualifications to good use…
I did the 11 Week Snowboarding Instructor Course with Nonstop in Fernie last year, and firstly I wanted to say a massive thank you for an amazing season!
Admittedly, I never had any intentions of working as an instructor when I signed onto the course, my only goal was kicks and giggles (of which there were many!). However, as last summer came and went and the craving for snow started to build up again, I started to think more and more about how I could use my Level 2 CASI qualifications for something positive… At the Ski Show last year I accidentally bumped into an elderly gentleman named Ian MacWatt, who runs a charity called the Caring Cancer Trust (CCT). After chatting for a bit, I suddenly found myself signed up for a week instructing for his charity the following April!
I have just returned from this trip in La Plagne, and wanted to let you know that my qualifications have allowed me to put a smile on the faces of twenty kids all aged between 12-14 who have either finished or are still in treatment for cancer…
CCT is a small charity that takes children with cancer on healing holidays. In 2010 they had 10 children, who all skied. In 2011 we took 20 kids out, and nearly half of those chose to do snowboarding. They had never been on a slope before, and by the end of the week they all knew how to turn! Only one kid, James, had been fortunate to do a couple of introductory snowboarding lessons on a dry slope before he came out, and he progressed so much in the course of a week that he landed his first 180 AND learned how to ride switch! But more importantly, every single one of the kids got to enjoy the mountains, build their confidence and came home with a smile on their face.
Apart from obviously making these kids smile and let them have fun on the mountain, I also got the opportunity to spend two days riding and teaching alongside Jenny Jones! She is an amazing coach, a lovely person and very easy to work with. And if somebody had told me a year ago when I left Fernie that I would be teaching alongside the X-games Winner, I would have laughed in their faces! Jenny is an ambassador for the charity along with Graham Bell (who also came out with us).
For me, this is the perfect way to use my CASI qualifications, and I really hope many more of your students take the opportunity to do the same, as it is extremely rewarding. I am already signed on for next years’ trip, and will be spending the summer fundraising for CCT.
Thank you so much again for last year, see you all at NONSTOCK!!
