Master The Mountain Course Diary - Week Four

It’s been such a busy week… after a rowdy farewell party for the three weekers, the MTM crew was forced to take a day off the mountain and relax their legs with an Avalanche Skills Training theory day. Nonstop's Dave (a former patroller) gave a briefing on snow pack stability, avalanche trends and terrain management...

Christy, our sales and marketing manager in Fernie, joined our team after taking the MTM course in the 2010/11 season. Her experience makes her a great source of information and wisdom for our current crew. This week she ran a Boulder Hut information tech session. Thanks Christy for shedding some light on expectations and some great tips to help increase the levels of comfort and make the most of the anticipated Boulder Hut adventure.

Local mountain guide Rick and Fernie ski patroller Megan led the Avalanche Skills Training (AST) field days, as the snowpack is considerate - it is cool to see some action in the field. Great work Rick and Megan.

Local legend Steve Kloepiz guided our team two days each through Fernie’s backcountry. Conditions forced the team to focus on efficient travel and route selection. A great way to prep and gear up for the anticipated adventure; exploring the Purcell Mountains with Boulder Hut Adventures.

Haley, an AST instructor and cat ski guide, took the gang out for one last transceiver training practice before the first group packed up for the chopper. A few of the FAR patrollers came out to help supervise and give tips and advice for efficient searching and digging techniques. It's great to have such a wealth of talent in resort who are keen to help, for the Nonstoppers can learn from.

USEFUL LINKS

The Master the Mountain course is a six week program that gives you the best possible training in big mountain skiing or riding. It's an ideal course for a career break, culminating in a trip to a remote backcountry lodge accessed by helicopter. The ski camps and snowboard courses are a great way to make sure that you don't just cruise around on the mountain, but that you actually improve. They are great fun, super sociable and you come away being able to tackle terrain you could only have imagined before your Nonstop program. Come and join us in Fernie and find out for yourself.
