Banff 11 Week Ski Instructor Course ‘07 – Week 9

It’s my pleasure to report to you the going’s on of the previous week, which has unfortunately flown by as quickly as the previous eight.

Having had one of the busiest ski-ing weekends on record with back country touring and a pilgrimage to the sacred Kicking Horse, Monday was the day where I hit the wall! Having skied in lessons all day and crashed down every bump run in Lake Louise it was decided an early night was in order!

Tuesday was back to Norquay, where as part of Level 2 training we were able to shadow a lesson. Olly and I were placed in a group being taught by Dave, a splendid Yorkshire lad who taught us a lot including a few good Northern style ski instructor jokes!

Wednesday was my second private lesson with Ryan. After an hour and a half I had plenty to work on although I was really pleased with how much I had progressed in that short time.

Thursday was a day for all us Nonstoppers to unite and accept the gauntlet thrown down by other courses based in Banff. The afternoon was spent at Sunshine on a timed slalom course. Despite being sandblasted by snow in the driving winds, we set some very competitive times and felt confident going into the evening’s event.

After a delicious dinner in Guido’s restaurant it was onto The Paddock where we divided into teams to begin the Scavenger Hunt. An interesting hour was spent running around Banff trying to obtain everything from ski-instructors in drag to a warm Mcdonalds breakfast. We returned to the Paddock where some hardcore teams stripped to their underwear to obtain valuable bonus points.

Finally it was time for results. One NONSTOP team obtained maximum points in the scavenger hunt and a clean sweep was achieved when it was announced that NONSTOP had also won the afternoon’s races.

Finally, Aurora’s to celebrate and watch the NONSTOP team, ‘Kokanee Warriors’, compete in the annual Beerfest. We unleashed our big gun, Simon who remains unbeatable at downing. By the end of the evening we were tied first and it was onto a tie-break but despite Sinead’s valiant efforts NONSTOP were beaten for the 1st and only time today.

After going into town on Saturday morning for supplies, 15 intrepid explorers left to spend a night under canvas in Alberta’s wilderness. On arrival we gave the woman folk concise instructions into how to setup the tent and we hunter gathering males began the vital task of constructing our snow/ice beer chairs.

After much refinement of building technique what can only be described as the finest outdoor living room ever to be witnessed was finished and it was time to axe a lime in half and enjoy a hard earned Corona. Meanwhile our expert guides had been building a fire and then produced a mountain of prime steak for us to consume over a fondue.

Those who survived a savage case of the meat sweats then washed down this veritable feast with s’mores, a few more Coronas and war stories. Bed was nearly as comfortable as the Y and apparently my snoring did a sterling job in keeping away local wildlife for which the group greatly indebted to me.

Fernie 11 Week Snowboard Instructor Course ‘07 – Week 8

18 people took and passed the CASI park course was this week and everyone learnt how to teach ‘meat hucking’.

The AMPers worked on their 360’s and cliff drops while those training for their level 2 got some practice teaching and short radius, advanced sliding turns.

Lot of laughs were had on Thursday night when everyone showed up for curling. The local club sent volunteers to show us how it’s done.

The weekend held a trip to Calgary to see the local NHL team, the Calgary Flames, play. They got smoked by the Ghostriders so we headed to a nearby bar, drown our sorrows, or rather for some big city partying.

Sunday saw some retail therapy and a chance to explore the big city before heading back to Fernie.

The Flames are good, but they are no Ghostriders, that’s forsure.

Banff 11 Week Snowboard Instructor Course ‘07 – Week 9

by Daniel Mortimer

To sum up such a memorable week in just a few words is quite a task but here
goes:

We started the week with the much anticipated winter camping.

We began to set up camp and despite careful planning one group still pitched their tent in a river! Although efforts were made to create a makeshift dam, nature got the better of us and we were forced to move the tent.

The following morning, cold and struggling from sleep deprivation, we still had a great time in the Canadian wilderness.

Tuesday came and not only were we greeted by knee deep fresh powder but the voyager restaurant welcomed a new chef.

Yet more fresh snow mid week, which allowed us to hike some breath-taking mountain ridges and take advantage of untracked powder as we ripped down the backside of Lake Louise.

To finish the week a trip to nearby Calgary was planned, I knew it would be a messy night when Tysen informed us that the bus had a liquor license.
Following that a certain Mr Knight received a standing ovation for his recent blue movie appearance!

Sadly the Calgary Flames lost the match but that didn’t stop some rowdy banter which prompted security guards to
position themselves either side of our group!

Yet more alcohol was consumed in club Coyotes with it’s crazy atmosphere and scantily clad bar girls (some may remember Miss White. What a great way to finish the week.

Red Mountain 11 Week Ski Instructor Course ‘07 – Week 8

by Tim Boyd

Another great week in Rossland with many activities enjoyed by the NONSTOP crew. Keeping up with its reputation it hasn’t stopped snowing all week. We had a particularly awesome powder day last Thursday which was enjoyed by all. In the past seven days we had a total of 152cm!!! We’ve been swimming in it!!!

A great week of food yet again at Clancy’s, we have all been enjoying the meals there and the 6 o’clock feeding ritual has become a much loved part of our NONSTOP life.

At the weekend we took a trip down to the nearby town of Trail on Friday to check out the Trail Smoke Eaters in a game of ice hockey. It was a fun night in the snow on Saturday for those who decided to take part in the winter camping activity. We hiked into the backcountry and found a suitable camping spot. It was hard working digging our snow caves but we were able to relax around a camp fire with a hot toddy afterwards. Some of the guys were a little on the cool side in the morning but it was a fun night and an experience that we won’t forget!

Overall it’s been yet another great week for all of us here in Rossland. Better sign off now and get back to Rossland life…. hope life for you is as good as it is for us!

Fernie 11 Week Ski Instructor Course ‘07 – Week 7

Mother Nature was sure up and down this week. We enjoyed some really warm temperatures and unfortunately some rain too! We lucked out though and were able to still do lots of skiing. Eleven nonstoppers took part in the CSCF level 1 to gain the opportunity to coach racing – lots of fast skiing, angulation and gate racing.

Our social activity this week was super popular and took part over two evenings so that everyone would have a chance to try curling. A few of the local curlers volunteered their time to show us the ropes of curling. Only one goose egg from slipping on the ice and a few stretched muscles, and of course lots of laughs made for an eventful evening of curling! Sweep!

Thank goodness Mother Nature gave us some new fresh snow in the backcountry for Friday and Saturday, our two days of cat skiing. We all got to enjoy fresh powder in the pristine backcountry. The cat rides gave us the opportunity to rest between runs, eat some lunch and share laughs from the previous run. The day was completed with a couple cold drinks and some hot food at the lodge.
