Banff 11 Week Ski Instructor Course ‘07 – Week 10

What-a week! A trip to Red and cat-skiing, thrills and spills galore!!!

Aside from the usual cool stuff that gets rammed into every week out here, we also took a road trip to visit our NONSTOP brothers over in Red.

The polar opposite from Banff, Red has only one bar but the greatest vibe ever and lots of home-grown fun and entertainment, not to mention the most legendary house parties.

Anyway we were put up in style in small deluxe chalets, each with their own hot-tub – swanky! A totally different experience from Banff but just as good.

As for those who went cat-skiing, yeah, they all came back with long faces and dragging their feet… Only Joking, it’s CAT-SKIING!! – What’s not to like???

Fernie 11 Week Snowboard Instructor Course ‘07 – Week 9

Another brilliant week of lessons.

Roughly 5 of us took the CASI Carve course, learning how to make perfect, pencil thin S marks in the snow. The rest of the crew shredded!

There was a small snow squall on Tuesday, so Wednesday everything was put on hold and the Cat-boarding rescheduled.

What a perfect day, sunny with 15 cm of new snow on a silky smooth base.

Our guides showed us breath taking scenery and great places to ‘huck our meat’. Overall, a fantastic time.

The weekend was packed with tons of great things to do; some chose to visit the US and had an amazing time in Whitefish.

There were breath-taking views from the hill, a hot tub at the motel and the bars offered cheap food and poker out back. What more could you ask for?

Another daring group went winter camping where they braved a night in a snow cave they had dug themselves. Crazy!

Banff 11 Week Snowboard Instructor Course ‘07 – Week 10

Aside from all the usual cool stuff that gets rammed into every day out here, this week we also took a road trip to visit our NONSTOP brothers over in Rossland, Red Mountain.

The polar opposite from Banff, Red has only one bar but the greatest vibe ever; plenty of home-grown fun & entertainment,
friendly locals, fantastic boarding on empty slopes and not to mention the most legendary house parties ever.

Anyway we were put up in style in small deluxe chalets, each with their own hot-tub – swanky! A totally different experience from Banff but just as good.

Red Mountain 11 Week Ski Instructor Course ‘07 – Week 9

This week saw us learning a little more about the town we’ve been living in for the past nine weeks.

A group of us signed up for a mine tour to get a good idea of where the locals work and what it’s like; pitch black is the answer to that! But good to find out more and have a greater understanding of our temporary home town.

Snow shoe-ing was the other event of the week, harder work then it looks but a fantastic way to get in touch with mother nature, not something we usually have time to take in as we fly past on boards and skis.

Cat-skiing/boarding and back country next week so am looking forward to learning yet more mountain skills.

Fernie 11 Week Ski Instructor Course ‘07 – Week 8

The time is flying by and we are still doing so much stuff. This was a big week with the snow park course where we learnt 360s, switch 180’s and other jumps and grabs that everyone wishes they had under their belt.

Also this week was back country skiing. It’s a brilliant experience learning how to use the terrain and understanding avalanches. Trying out touring bindings was pretty cool. You certainly earn your turns on this one!

For the weekend we were treated to a trip to Calgary to watch the Flames. Unfortunately the Flames lost but Coyotes lifted everyone’s spirits. The club is a magnificent place with good music and scantily clad bar maids so we danced the night away.

However, perhaps the headline event this week was Will’s birthday on Thursday. The theme was original- back to school. We all hid in his house to surprise him on his return from his celebratory meal. Once through the door, we rapidly dressed him in a hideous school girls outfit and played street hockey outside much to the neighbour’s delight.

What a great week!
