Fernie 11 Week Ski Instructor Course ‘07 – Week 3

By Ken’s Down

This week was ‘Demo Week’. The week the instructors give us a taster of what we can get up to after level 1. The instructor demo took us through what would be expected of us as instructors and the day was finished off with a ‘tech session’ about the different courses. The session helped some people, confused others and confirmed ideas. The big question is what course to take Level 2 or AMP? It’s a toughy!!!

The AMP demo came on Tuesday, lots of jumps and trees. The coaching demo came on Wednesday so racing was the activity of the day. Thursday saw us all spending the day at another resort,Kimberley.

Although we couldn’t see the mountain, the snow was great. Some people tried the Freeride Demo while the rest of us skied and enjoyed the mountain.

Friday was very effective private lessons to help tweak personal skiing problems and then Saturday was a much welcomed rest day.

Sunday was another bus trip for some. This time it was the credit trip to Panorama. Again we couldn’t see the mountain for fog, a shame with a name like Panorama! The snow was fab, the bumps great and the smokies hot dogs – smoking!!

Fernie 6 Week ‘Master the Mountain’ Course ‘07 – Week 6

The back country trip was full of amazing memories. Starting with being towed in behind a skidoo, skinning through an enchanting forest up to a stunning hut (all built by hand), delicious food, sauna and wonderful fresh track skiing. What a great way to round off the six weeks. Back in Fernie, everyone finished off passing their Level 1 and a small group decided to spend the night in a snow hole, cold but rewarding! With the MTM#1 team heading back to the normal way of life, we leave with new friendships, qualified instructors and a step closer to mastering that mountain!

Banff 11 Week Ski Instructor Course ‘07 – Week 4

by Simon Rothenberg

Week four got off to a slow start after a weekend of partying. We started with some tough technical work but spirits were soon raised when snow started to fall. Tuesday saw us return to the magic carpet at Norquay for some beginner progression for next weeks level one. Tuesday evening was cheap night at the cinema.

Wednesday was racing day at sunshine; we raced a giant slalom course which was set up for us. Wednesday night was the hockey rematch against the instructors. With snow continuing to fall everyone got an early night anticipating a great day ahead.

Thursday morning came and we skied fresh powder all day – awesome! Spirits were high on Thursday evening after a great day and it was Claire’s 21 st birthday! In honour of this great occasion we all dressed up with costumes ranging from Ghostbusters to cowboys to a certain instructor in a cat suit and finally a raisin!

Friday at Louise was less intensive and more fun and we ended the day in the lodge of where our instructors gave us a few tips on level 1 and a few beers were had.

Fernie 11 Week Snowboard Instructor Course ‘07 – Week 3

By Adam Rowland

This week started with a snowmobiling trip into the mountains which was the by far the best possible start to any week. As an old biker with a long beard lead the way we all let rip on our unrestricted machines of mayhem and had a seriously wicked time, taking in some breathtaking scenery.

To start the demo week and give us an insight into what we want to consider doing after level 1, our instructors gave us a taste of what to expect from the carving and level 2 programme which focuses on advanced riding techniques. This was followed by a tech session on board maintenance.

Wednesday was a day trip to Kimberley mountain for a park demo. The resort was really good and had 10cm of fresh however the weather wasn’t on our side as the fog came in and the park was closed so we spent the day exploring the mountain and losing half people!

At the weekend, after a heavy night out at the Central, we were up and on the coach by 7am for another day trip, this time to Panorama mountain. Some great riding was had in an awesome park and pipe.

Banff 11 Week Snowboard Instructor Course ‘07 – Week 4

by Ben Battell

One to one private lessons with the pros on Monday and Tuesday were wicked and really helpful. As a result everyone is feeling more confident now with individual things to work on in both their riding and teaching.
IT’S STARTED TO SNOW!!!! On wednesday it started dumping and it’s nice to be riding a bit of fresh.
On Thursday we all went out for an amazing meal at the Elk and Oarsman with many of us trying their speciality the elk burger and only the girls managing to finish the chocolate cake. We were there again with our good friends the skiers who had decided to dress up in some odd costumes including a raisin??? After that most of us cruzed down to a local bar followed by one of the two local nightclubs hoodoos, lets just say a crazy night was had by all!
Impressively most people made it to the hill the next day where a sweet day was had by all hitting some of the most challenging terrain yet!
At the weekend the place to be was Sunshine Village where we will be taking our CASI 1, so everyone was furtively scouting appropriate terrain and practicing their demos and lessons. On Saturday we also had an interesting photography session with Bill Marsh whose clients include Oakley and K2.
