11 Week Snowboard Instructor Course Diary – Fernie ’09
Week 8 – by Jack Fry
Monday
Monday was just a usual day getting up around 7:30 going to breakfast getting on the bus going up the mountain ready for lessons. Got back from lessons and went in for tea. After tea we watch a couple of films in the movie room and chilled out.
Tuesday
Tuesday was a normal day, breakfast, bus, warm up run, lessons, bus home, tea. Tuesday night those of us that had the Park and Pipe Freestyle course did a bit of group revision which kind of turn into a Chuck Norris fact telling session!
Wednesday
Wednesday was the start of our Park and Pipe Freestyle course, we met in the day-lodge at 8:30 for registration for the course. Through the day we learnt park safety and an introduction on airs/jumping and basic rails and boxes. When we got back we went to Edge of the World (snowboard shop) there was a 50% off sale on so I brought a new board and bindings!

Thursday
Thursday was the second day of the Park and Pipe Freestyle course, during the day we were introduced to airs with grabs and rotations. After the course finished we meet in the Griz bar for “Thirsty Thursday” where we were told we had all passed the course!! When we got back we had tea then got straight back on the bus and went to Pass Powder Keg for a night shred!! Which was awesome!
Friday
Friday we got up as normal but then packed a weekend bag ready for our trip to Red Mountain. We got on the bus at 11 o’clock and headed for Red Mountain. On the way we stopped off at the Kokanee beer factory and had a tour around, it was good to see all that beer being made!! When we arrived we had tea in the day-lodge at Red with the Red nonstop crew. After that we headed back to 1 of our rooms an had a hot tub party! 12 people in a 6man hot tub was fun!

Saturday
Saturday we got up from our crazy 5 star rooms and head for the slopes. Apart from being hung over we started off well, then a lad by the name of john butler hit the xl kicker, over shot it came down and landed on his head and shoulder! Dislocated his shoulder and broke his arm so was rushed off to hospital and now has a metal plate and 12 pins in his shoulder! Ouch! Saturday night we all went out to a white party which we all got wasted at!
Sunday
Sunday was a very chilled out day after riding and partying hard on Saturday. We did a bit of riding then back to the rooms to tidy up and pack our bags ready for the off. The bus left Red about 5 o’clock and headed for Fernie. On the way home we got stuck on a hill and couldn’t get up it so the driver got out and put chains on the wheels to stop them sliding on the snow, after an hour an half we made it up the hill! We finally arrived back in Fernie around midnight.
All in all it was a eventful week with some ups and downs, but mostly good times good people!
