Red Mountain 11 Week Ski Instructor Course ‘07 – Week 7
By Carol Skolimowski
All the stress had gone from Level 1 and it was time to have a blast on the mountain. The snow kindly obliged with 55 cms during the week, for most it was the best riding and skiing ever. Saturday witnessed the the biggest pow day yet. Rupert travelled over from Fernie to do some videoing, but had to cut it short as yet more snow came down.
This week was decision week on whether to follow the Level 2 Instructor track or AMP and by the end of the week the groups were formed and we are now working towards our new goals for the second half of our course. Emily went off to play with the “Ski Questers”, giving the team aspiring to be level 2 ski instructors the chance to ski with Aladar. Aladar has a really passion for teaching skiing and wasn’t slow in showing this and sharing with us his theories and explanations giving a different perspective on skiing. Andy excelled this week to become “rider of the week”. Jane, Tony and Jon spent some time in the real world shadowing some lessons.
The second snowmobiling trip took place and judging by the exhausted faces on their return, a tiring but great day was had. A number of us met at the curling rink on Wednesday evening to have our first taste of making those big stones curl down the ice. A lot of laughs, awkward poses, hard falls on the ice and some good shots enabled us to manage two ends and a big debate on which team actually won!!
A few people trekked over to Apex Mountain to watch the Freestyle FIS World Cup and skied on well-groomed slopes, but with poor visibility, so were disappointed to find out that the Pow had arrived in Rossland, but Sara assures me the hot tub was really good!
