Fernie 11 Week Ski Instructor Course ‘07 – Week 6

Whoa!! What a crazy, fun week! Where to start?

It snowed and snowed and snowed! The powder was so deep! We all had some of our best runs of the season this week. We had to stop often to empty our jacket of snow and catch our breath since all the powder was billowing up into our face and finding its way into the top of our jacket. That’s deep snow! Lessons were great this week, obviously working more on our powder skiing skills!

Friday was a full day indoor session for the Avalanche Safety Training course. It was a welcomed rest after skiing so hard all week. Saturday and Sunday were a full field day of snow testing and snow analysis. It was a most informative course and a fun day in the field with some very experienced mountain guides to show us the potential fun and danger of backcountry.

Friday night also was the start of Fernie’s huge annual, weekend event, Griz Days! The town came alive. We were part of starting off the weekend event by participating in the Griz parade. The theme this year was Mardi Gras so there was quite the party with voodoo dolls, beads, boobs, and much more! The Nonstop bus was full of people for the parade- oh… and people on top of the bus too. It was a rocking bus, literally!! Griz days also included the dummy downhill, the Griz competition complete with the axe throwing event, the torchlight parade, pancake breakfast, and various other events.

And… our local Ghostrider hockey team that won the championship for the regular season have advanced into the second series of play offs. Go ghostriders go!
